Mazda CX-5 2021 vs. Honda CR-V 2021: Perform to a New Level

The 2021 CX-5 is a compact crossover where power, responsiveness, style and refinement meet. The intuitive interior and systems help you focus on the road ahead, but you can also spice up your driving with standard manual drive mode and available paddle shifters. Inside, you can embellish your trips with standard Android Auto/Apple CarPlay and drive confidently with many standard and available safety systems.

To help illustrate the quality of the 2021 Mazda CX-5, we compare it to the 2021 Honda CR-V.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 adds serious performance and fun

The CX-5 features two engine types that each power multiple models. A SkyActiv 2.5-litre four-cylinder generates 187 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque in the GX, GS, Kuro and GT. The Signature, 100th Anniversary and (optional) GT receive a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder that reaches an impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93 octane fuel. These numbers change to a respective 227 and 310 with 87 octane. Either way, this compact SUV stays on top of traffic.

All CX-5 models feature a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode and drive selection switch. Turbocharged models add paddle shifters.

The Honda CR-V includes a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder that produces 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. However, this is the only engine offered. The drivetrain includes a CVT, but it doesn't include paddle shifters or manual mode. Overall, the CX-5 is the more capable performer with better power and driver interaction.

Advanced handling technology in the 2021 Mazda CX-5

It would be difficult to enjoy an agile vehicle with the fatigue that goes along with it. G-Vectoring Control is a technology in the CX-5 that adjusts power delivery and shifts vehicle weight during turns so you feel less stress from the forces produced. This enables you to get more out of your drive before the drive gets more out of you. You won't find this type of technology in the CR-V.

i-Activ AWD also contributes to a great ride by using 27 sensors that activate 200 times per second to monitor road and vehicle conditions. This system adjusts torque to help corner and gain control in less-than-desirable road conditions.
