Are your winter tires still good?
October 28 2020,
With new winter tires, you don't worry too much. However, after a few years, you ask yourself the question; are they still good? Here are some signs that tell you otherwise.
1 - Year of manufacturing
The experts agree on one thing. After five years, the properties of a tire lose their effectiveness. This is not to say that a rubber can't be effective in a sixth or seventh year. However, it is something to watch out for. If your vehicle is still in the garage, warm, it's more possible. If it's exposed to the sun, it's less likely. Also, what about the number of kilometres driven over the years? In short, after a certain amount of time, there is no chance to take.
2 - Grip
Where it's also unlikely to happen is if you notice that after a while your tire's grip is no longer the same. If you notice that your vehicle slips more often in the snow or when cornering, it tends to chase more. These two signs do not lie. They indicate a worn tread and a shoulder that no longer bites into the snow.
3 - Visual signs
By carefully observing a tire, we discover that it speaks to us. For example, when the grooves become shallower, we lose efficiency. In fact, it is recommended that you change your tires when they are 50% worn, i.e., 7/32 of an inch deep. Also, if you notice the appearance of cracks, both at the bottom of the grooves and on the sidewalls, it's time to replace your tires. The same goes for bubbles or deformities that can be felt when you run your hand over the tread. In short, pay attention.
